Youth club given a new lease of life

Buckingham Youth Club had lots to celebrate at its annual meeting on Wednesday night.

The public meeting marked the club’s first anniversary as a limited company.

It also saw the club officially launched as a registered charity and the handover of the lease for the Youth Centre building.

The youth club has now taken over responsibility for the building from Bucks County Council (BCC). Along with the lease, club chairman John Barnett accepted a cheque for £25,000 from BCC.

Mr Barnett thanked everyone who had helped keep the youth club going since BCC’s decision to withdraw funding for youth services in 2010.

He said youth worker Jim Whatmore had been “an absolute stalwart”.

“Without Jim, this wouldn’t have got off the ground,” said Mr Barnett.

Andrew Carver of Tearle & Carver Accountants and Diana Davis of Chandler Ray solicitors were also praised for their generosity with their time and professional advice.

And Mr Barnett thanked Buckingham Town Council, whose support totalling £25,000 over two financial years had, he said, been “vital” in securing the club’s future.
