More than £2 million has been given to Bucks County Council to help it repair flood-damaged roads – but a major route that is riddled with potholes is not scheduled for resurfacing.

Following one of the wettest winters on record, the Government established a Severe Weather Recovery Scheme (SWRS) to help repair local highway networks.

Bucks County Council (BCC) has been granted £2,507,486 from the scheme.

A list of 65 sites are due to receive treatment as part of the SWRS.

But only eight roads in the Advertiser area have been named – mainly in Marsh Gibbon and the Claydons.

Local resident Andrew Thomas has been asking BCC to undertake resurfacing work on the A421 Buckingham to Milton Keynes road.

But the major transport route is not deemed bad enough to repair.

Mr Thomas said: “Every morning, I follow a line of traffic and we have to snake in and out of the holes.

“It is dangerous as you are looking for holes and not traffic. I realise money is short but something needs to be done before lives are lost.”

Area technician Matt Whincup told Mr Thomas: “I appreciate that the road in sections is not in the best condition. Yes, there are many potholes along the road but currently none of these defects are category 1 in nature, ie not dangerous.

“We have plans in the near future to carry out patch repairs to these defects in the worse affected areas. This is all we can do until funding is secured for full resurfacing treatment.”

Mr Whincup said BCC will shortly be bidding for central government money to help fund a £9million five-year road resurfacing plan.

And he added: “If all goes to plan, come 2016 a treatment programme should be under way. In the meantime all we can do is to continue to fix defects as part of our revenue works.”

A county council spokesman told the Advertiser the SWRS money can only be used to repair the roads worst affected by the flooding.

She said: “The A421 is not currently programmed for inclusion in the member-chosen road surfacing programme but will continue to be monitored to ensure that any potholes that are in need of urgent repair are dealt with as necessary.”
