A community duck race raised more than £1,000 towards new school facilities.

Buckingham’s Royal Latin School hosted the race which included a business boat race, on the River Great Ouse.

Around 500 ducks were released from the footbridge at Tanlaw Mill watched by hundreds of onlookers in Chandos Park.

The event was part of the school’s 600 Campaign, to raise £5 million for a new science facility, The Discovery Centre. In total, the event raised £1,200 which means the school needs a further £375,000 to reach their target.

The business boats had been dressed up and the winner of the best dressed went to Sweet Dreams of Castle Street. Twenty boats were released for the race with T King’s boat the clear winner but only just crossing the finishing line as it took on water.

All the ducks were sponsored for the duck race and the first, second and third places all went to children.

Jo Ballantine, director of development at the Royal Latin, said: “This has been a really fun event, where the Royal Latin has reached out to both the businesses and families in the local community. Many of the youngsters at the duck race today will benefit from exploring science in our new discovery centre from 2015 onwards and local businesses will benefit from the enriched skills of these children.”
