Archaeologists from the University of Buckingham have discovered that frogs’ legs were an English delicacy long before the French made it their signature dish.
The discovery was made at an archaeological dig at Amesbury, Wiltshire, led by David Jacques, senior research fellow at the university. Among the team’s finds at the site near Stonehenge, was the burnt humerus of a toad.
The charred leg bone was found alongside small fish vertebrate bones of trout or salmon and burnt aurochs bones – the predecessor of cows.
The finds date back to between 6250BC and 7596BC, about 5,000 years before Stonehenge was built, making this the earliest evidence of a cooked toad or frog leg found in the world; millennia before the dish appeared in France.
The dig will be made into a TV documentary by the BBC, Smithsonian and CBC.
