A gas leak in Bicester led to the evacuation of a number of properties earlier this afternoon.

Engineers from Southern Gas Networks were called out after a piece of Chiltern Railways equipment struck a ‘medium pressure’ gas mains which had been ‘badly damaged’.

Police and fire crews asked householders in the immediate area of London Road to leave their properties and the road was closed between Launton Road and Priory Road.

A Southern Gas Networks spokesman said the company was working with emergency services to ensure the safety of the public while the damage was assessed.

She added: “We’d like to reassure the public that we’re doing everything we can to resolve this as safely and quickly as possible.”

The leak has now been fixed and roads will re-open shortly.
