If you can drive and can spare some time, the hospital car service needs you.

Volunteer drivers are being sought to join the service, which is part of Community Care North Bucks.

Since the service started in 1982, demand for it has increased. Trips are taken to hospitals in Stoke Mandeville, Milton Keynes, Amersham, High Wycombe, Banbury and Oxford,

Anyone who can help should contact transport co-ordinator Sue Watkins on 01280 816266 or sue@mkteddy.com. She said: “When I took over as transport coordinator in October 2006 we had 12 drivers and were doing an average of 30 trips a month, about 360 a year.

“We now average 100 trips a month carried out by a team of 37 volunteer drivers.”

Drivers wait for the patient during their appointment and return them to their homes afterwards. There is a small charge for the service, which depends on which hospital the patient is going to. Drivers are paid 45p a mile.

Volunteer drivers can specify when they are free and can fit it around their other commitments.

Anyone wanting to use the service should ask at their doctor’s surgery.
