A town mayor has slammed plans to alter a popular car park as ‘stupid’ and ‘ludicrous’.
The Highways Agency wants to halve the number of car park spaces in Towcester town centre to just 14 and slash the parking time allowance from two hours to one.
It also wants to create a one way system through the car park and move delivery lorries to the opposite side of the road.
But Towcester Town Council has blasted the plans and after a unanimous vote against them on Monday night, is preparing its letter of objections to the agency.
Town mayor Jim Lynch said the agency first justified the changes with environmental concerns.
But when the town council challenged the figure of 45 per cent reduction in emissions as an ‘exaggeration’, the agency simply removed it from its proposal.
Mr Lynch said: “It’s completely stupid because it now has no qualitative justification.
“They have gone from a proposition which no one believes to a proposition where there is no justification at all.
“And it’s ludicrous to change it from two hours to one as it would make it almost impossible to go shopping in Towcester.”
Mr Lynch said with just 10 car park slots and four disabled spaces in a one way system, shoppers will have much less than an hour to shop because finding a place will take time.
He also said moving delivery lorries to the opposite side of the road and asking drivers to ferry goods across would ‘be ‘dangerous’ and causing ‘more congestion’ would increase emission levels.
The Highways Agency was unavailable to comment at time of going to press.
