A new rector has been appointed after a wait of almost 12 months.

Rev Verena Breed has been appointed to the Bicester benefice following the retirement of Rev Canon Theresa Scott in July last year.

The Bishop of Dorchester, Rt Rev Colin Fletcher has announced the appointment following an extensive consultation and selection process.

Churchwarden Matthew Clements said: “Everyone has been working very hard during this period of change to keep things moving ahead. We are all delighted at Verena’s appointment and look forward to welcoming her and her family.”

Rev Breed currently leads a team running four churches in the diocese of Chester. In Bicester she will take charge of St Edburg’s with St Laurence’s, Caversfield, and head up the team of clergy from St Mary’s, Launton, St Peter’s, Bucknell and Emmanuel Church, Bure Park, all of which were involved in the appointment.

Rev Breed will move to Bicester with her husband and two teenage children during the summer.

An extensive re-ordering programme of the church, the installation of toilets and a servery, has continued despite the absence of a vicar.

Celebrations are planned on July 19 and 20 to mark the opening of these new facilities by the mayor of Bicester.

This date is also the patronal festival of St Edburga, the Saxon nun whose remains were held in the Bicester Priory and to whom the church is dedicated.
