Plans to build 45 homes in Ambrosden were rejected by Cherwell District Council (CDC) for the second time yesterday, Thursday.
The application, which was submitted by the trustees of the Norman Collisson Foundation, was for Ambrosden Court, off Merton Road, to be demolished and replaced with 45 new homes, of which 16 would have been affordable housing.
The trustees resubmitted the plans in November last year after the original application was rejected in July.
Councillors voted against the second application at a meeting of the planning committee yesterday.
Michael Gibbard, councillor for planning, said: “This application is for a large development within a small village and as a council, we feel it is detrimental to Ambrosden. Not only would the proposal harm the character and appearance of the village, it also creates very real safety concerns around the new access areas. With all this considered, plus the fact it is contrary to Cherwell’s emerging local plan, we had no option but to refuse on these grounds.”
The plans had received letters of objection from Ambrosden Parish Council who echoed the concerns of Cherwell and stated they would prefer to see the existing building retained and converted into flats to preserve its heritage.
There were an additional 38 letters and emails objecting to the proposals.
The council will again discuss the application at a hearing on February 18, which was requested by the applicant following the original refusal.
