A multi-million pound upgrade for Buckingham’s Swan Pool has received a £500,000 grant from Sport England.
The funding boost comes a few weeks after AVDC’s cabinet gave the go-ahead to proceed with the improvements to the the 18-year-old facility, subject to receiving the Sport England funding.
AVDC is also allocating about £700,000 of Section 106 funding (developers’ contributions).
This includes virtually all the Section 106 money that AVDC currently holds for the Buckingham area, meaning other local projects will have to be put on hold.
The Swan Pool renovation is estimated to cost a total of about £3 million.
Building work is expected to start on site this summer and be completed by summer 2015, subject to the council agreeing capital investment in the project.
District councillor Howard Mordue, who is cabinet member for leisure, said: “We are very pleased to receive this lottery funding to transform the facilities at the Swan Pool and Leisure Centre.”
But district councillor Robin Stuchbury said it was a shame AVDC was using up so much of Buckingham’s Section 106 money on the scheme, instead of funding it out of capital budgets.
