A Bicester woman who set up a successful care company in Bicester in 2012 is now expanding her business into Buckingham and the surrounding villages.
Bluebird Care (Cherwell) was set up by Suzzanne Elgar and her husband John, after they had the experience of needing to find care for Mrs Elgar’s elderly grandmother.
Mrs Elgar, aged 46, said she was shocked.
“It was not quality of care,” she said. “It was just coming in, doing the bare minimum and rushing out again.”
The couple felt there was a real need for a company that would provide top-quality care to people in their homes.
The company has gone from strength to strength and now employs 25 care staff and three office staff, serving Bicester, Brackley, Banbury and Kidlington.
The company offers a range of home care options for elderly people and people with learning disabilities.
“We don’t do any 15-minute visits,” said Mrs Elgar. “Our minimum is half an hour.
“We believe here that the task of giving care is all about building a relationship with people. Without building a relationship, you can’t deliver quality care.
“For my nan, sometimes that carer was the only person she saw all day.”
The company also offers companionship visits, overnight care and live-in care.
In December, Mr and Mrs Elgar also acquired the franchise for Buckingham, and are starting to recruit local staff.
Mrs Elgar said: “If someone’s got the passion, it doesn’t matter to me if they’re 18 or 65. I think you can teach them the skill sets. We look for someone who’s genuinely got that passion. You can’t teach that.”
