With district coucils prepared with full stocks of salt, and almost round the clock gritting, all of the regions trunks roads remained open during the first part of the week despite around half a foot of snow over the weekend.

However many headteachers gave children an extra holiday as snowed under or iced over back streets and rural roads made the school run a dangerous prospect. So instead children decided to enjoy the thrills and spills of the toboggan run.

Parents have been seen swapping the push chair for a pull sledge, while others have been seen using sledges as shopping trolleys rather than risk the drive to the supermarket.
