Five men have been sent to prison for their involvement in an attempted burglary, which saw one of them detained by members of the public.

Marius Oprea, 24, Visan Vasile, 41, Deofil Minea, 23, Gheorghe Cozma, 24 and Sorin Turcan, 42, were all charged with attempted burglary following the incident in Paulerspury on March 12.

All five appeared at Northampton Crown Court on Wednesday, having pleaded guilty. Oprea was sentenced to 10 months, Minea and Cozma 11 months and Turcan and Visan 13 months.

Police were called to a burglary in progress in Grays Lane on the night of March 12 after someone heard a window being smashed in a nearby property.

Members of the public disturbed the men, chasing them across a field before detaining one of them until the police arrived.

A large-scale search of the area then took place involving police officers, helicopter and dog section, resulting in the arrest of the other four men.

Northants Police Inspector Andy Hall, commander for south Northants, said: “I am pleased these five men all pleaded guilty and have been given custodial sentences.

“I would like to thank the members of public who went beyond what was expected of them to detain one of the offenders prior to our arrival.

“South Northants remains the lowest crime area in the county and we are committed to reducing incidents even further.”
