Primary school children from Buckingham helped keep an age-old custom alive yesterday, Thursday, as they took part in traditional maypole dancing for May Day.
Thankfully, despite grey skies, the weather held out, and there was a good turnout of parents and onlookers to watch the children’s performances on the green outside Buckingham Parish Church.
The festivities were opened by the town crier and outgoing Mayor of Buckingham Ruth Newell who made a short welcoming speech.
Pupils from Bourton Meadow Academy and George Grenville Academy performed a variety of country dances and maypole dances.
Even tiny tots from Bourton Meadow Foundation 2 joined in, using a special mini-maypole.
