Art students put their paintbrushes to good use to brighten up the outdoor area of a village pub.

Youngsters from The Buckingham School were invited to paint murals on the walls of The Wheatsheaf pub, in Maids Moreton.

Landlord Cliff Thirkettle, who took over the running of the pub with his wife, Kim, in February, painted the walls of his beer garden white, but felt it needed more of an artistic touch.

Mr Thirkettle said: “We thought about growing some plants up them, but then we thought ‘Wouldn’t it be nice to have some murals?’

“We gave the school a ring and we asked them if they were interested. They jumped at the chance.”

He added he received a donation of 12 different colours of paint from Johnstone’s Trade, in Bletchley and let the students do what they wanted.

“The feedback I’ve been getting from customers is ‘Wow!’” he said. “It is a local project, done by local students for a local pub. It was great to see 15 young people, all extremely talented artists, at work.”

Among the pictures in the mural are the twisted chimney house, the Buckingham swan emblem, the front door of the Old Gaol and the Old Town Hall clock, showing the exact time they painted the mural.
