An oil drum, a huge tractor tyre and seven traffic cones were among the seventy-one bags of rubbish collected in Towcester recently.

Community-minded volunteers took part in a Towcester Tidy-Up weekend, organised by Towcester Rotary Club. With equipment provided by Rivercare, a Keep Britain Tidy group funded by Thames Water, 47 volunteers tackled some of the town’s mucky spots including along the banks of Silverstone Brook, the Mill Pond and the Water Meadows. Organiser David Reed said: “We get a great deal of satisfaction from it. When you have finished you can look back and it is quite a different scene.

“If a place is generally kept clean and tidy people are less likely to drop litter. It might give some people pause for thought.”

The tidy-up is an annual event and the next cleaning-up operation is scheduled for the weekend of World Rivers Day, Sunday, September 28.
