In the run-up to the national Armed Forces Day celebrations on June 28, a mum has spoken of her pride after seeing her son guarding Her Majesty The Queen during the D-Day celebrations earlier this month.
Gunner Michael McCarthy, from Buckingham, was chosen from his regiment to form part of the honour guard to welcome their sovereign to the celebrations in Normandy on June 6.
Gunner McCarthy, aged 23, has been in the Royal Artillery for six years and is attached to 32 Regiment, 18 Battery, based at Lark Hill, Salisbury.
He recently returned from his second tour of duty in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.
Proud mum Helen Graham, of Westfields, who recorded the Normandy celebrations on her TV, said: “I don’t think I’ve stopped smiling.”
