PEOPLE in North Marston will no longer need to travel nine miles for the basics after the official opening of the village’s new community shop.
MP John Bercow did the formal opening on Saturday in front of a large crowd of well wishers.
The last shop in the village closed more than 25 years ago but now the village has increased in size and the cost of travel has increased dramatically, with the nearest supermarket nine miles away.
In 2008, a group of villagers set up a committee to look at re-establishing a village shop and raised more than £110,000 to build, equip and stock the new purpose built shop. The group is aiming to support local producers, provide a convenient retail facility for villagers and nearby traders and to provide a social centre particularly for senior citizens.
The shop is staffed by full time manager, Eddie Parsley, who will be supported by 20 volunteers. Any surplus funds from trading will be spent on village projects.
