Poor puss - charity reports sharp rise in abandoned moggies

Kittens found abandoned in Brackley highlight crisis

A PAIR of 12 week old kittens have been found abandoned in Brackley as a national charity reports a 20 per cent increase in the number of young cats being abandoned.

Anne Buckingham of Rehoming Animals in Need in Charlton near Brackley said the two kittens, one white and the other ginger and white were found in a zipped up laundry bag within the grounds of Winchester House School in High Street on Monday.

Ms Buckingham said: "The school is on holidays so I don't know why someone would leave them there, especially in the full heat of a sunny day. It just so happened there was something on at the school and they were found.

"They are very pretty cats but they were thin, very little and they were terrified."

She added: "In the last two weeks we have taken in about 10 kittens let alone older cats. Normally I only take older cats but there are so many kittens around the charities who normally take them can't."

Animal charity Blue Cross which has 11 adoption centres and a network of local foster carers is reporting that many of its centres are being overwhelmed by abandoned kittens. From January to June 2010, 542 kittens were given up, compared to 456 during the same period in 2008.

Blue Cross believe the increase in abandoned kittens could be due to financial concerns, with some pet owners unable to cope with the costs of caring for a litter that they can't give away. The are now encouraging owners to neuter their cats from an early age to prevent unwanted animals.

Blue Cross vet nurse Tamsin Durston says: "We're facing a kitten crisis across the country so it's vital that people neuter their cats now to prevent the problem getting any worse.

RAIN is also looking for volunteers, for more details contact Ms Buckingham on 01280 847487.
