A weekly leisure run was hijacked by supporters converging to show support for a cancer sufferer.

Friends, relatives and colleagues of Anita West, from Buckingham, took part in the Buckingham Park Run last Saturday morning.

Mrs West, aged 58, has been running regularly for the last 10 years since her first brush with breast cancer in 2005.

Since discovering the Buckingham Park Run through Bourton Park last year, she has competed 19 times.

Her last run was five weeks ago.

Sadly, the cancer recently returned with a vengeance.

In recognition of Mrs West’s fight, her work colleagues from Buckingham animal pharmaceuticals company Vetoquinol joined friends and family to run 5km at 9am on Saturday.

The runners included her husband Peter, son Tom, aged 31, who had flown in from Austria to help care for his mother, and daughter Emily, aged 27, who lives in London.

Mrs West watched the run with friends and shouted support from Bourton Meadow car park.

And around the world, other family members and friends also took part, running at exactly the same time in Japan, America, Germany, Austria, France and New Zealand.

Tom came in first in a time of 18 minutes 20 seconds, and Emily was second lady with a time of 21 minutes 54 seconds
