Sign scheme scrapped after trader protests

Changes to street signs in Bicester's Telford Road Industrial Estate have been dropped after traders complained the move would cost them hundreds of pounds.

Lynn Wright of Bicester Bed Centre, who has a warehouse on the industrial estate, was among those to get a letter in May warning of legal action if their deeds and signs were not altered to reflect the changes.

Cherwell District Council had proposed giving the cul-de-sacs along Telford Road their own names, such as Engineering Close and Innovation Close, in order to help visitors find their destinations more easily.

The changes were criticised as unnecessary by Mrs Wright, who said a large sign and map at the entrance to Telford Road would have been a better idea.

But following discussions with business owners and Bicester Chamber of Commerce, the planned changes have been dropped, a Cherwell District Council spokesman confirmed.

Ben Jackson, chairman of Bicester and District Chamber of Commerce, said: "At a time of what is effectively an austerity economy, this definitely makes sense.

"We don't want businesses having to spend money on new stationary, deeds and signs in the current climate."

Mrs Wright, whose warehouse would have been on Innovation Close, said she was pleased the planned changes were not now going ahead. She said: "I'm pleased that they've come to their senses. It just would have been a massive change, and I think it was an irresponsible idea.

"I hope we'll get a bigger sign like the one they've got in the Chaucer Business Park, which they did talk about a couple of years ago."
