A new college based at Silverstone Motor Racing Circuit, which opened two years ago, has been rated ‘good’ after its first Ofsted inspection.

The college was visited by inspectors from the Government’s education watchdog at the end of April and a report published this week states the school is ‘good’.

Inspectors found that most students are from white British backgrounds and the proportion of students from minority ethnic backgrounds is well below

average and the proportion of disabled students and those who have special educational needs is well below average.

The proportion of girls at the UTC is very low, currently around 15 per cent overall.

The report states: “The great majority of teaching is good and some is outstanding. Very effective learning was observed in almost all curriculum areas and students’ work indicates particularly strong learning over time in English, mathematics, engineering, chemistry and physics.”

“Students are articulate, confident and focused. Students are highly regarded by the local business community”

Principal, Neil Patterson, said: “I can’t express how happy I am with the result of this inspection.

“It is clearly of great importance in confirming the credibility of a new establishment, and reflects what we already knew about Silverstone UTC, its staff and its students.

“There is no room for complacency, however, so we will continue to work to achieve our goal of building high-performing, work-ready, young people.”

Silverstone UTC is sponsored jointly by Silverstone Circuits, Tresham College and the University of Northampton.
