POLITICAL power in the district has been condensed after the South Northants Council Conservative leadership reduced the number of cabinet members.
Towcester Liberal Democrats welcomed the move, which they say will save £12,000 in allowances, but are cautious over the newly created roles of Member Champions who will focus on issues involving heritage and design. There will also be geographical champions for rural areas in the east and west of the district as well as champions for Brackley and Towcester. In the surprise announcement during council’s annual meeting on Wednesday, May 9, council leader Mary Clarke said they will reduce the number of cabinet members from eight to six. She also announced a restructure and the replacement of three review and development committees with a single scrutiny committee, a strategic planning and regeneration committee, and a financial reforms committee to oversee changes proposed by the government.
Martin Johns, (Lib Dem, Towcester) said “It’s unclear what a Member Champion will be and we believed all councillors should be champions.”
