Brackley Town geared up for a tough test at Leamington this Saturday with a comfortable 2-0 home win against Redditch United in the Evostik Southern League Premier Division.
After a poor run of form which had seen them lose their last five ganes Saints bounced back to take the three points with goals from Owen Story and Steve Diggin.
A forgettable first half devoid of goalmouth excitement brought few chances but did produce the opening goal from Story. The lively winger stabbed home on 38 minutes as referee John Mayhew delayed his whistle for a penalty for handball following Tom Winters’ surging run.
The goal inspired the home side who twice came close to extending the lead before the break. First Josh Green headed inches wide from Winters’ deep corner before Michael Chennells fed Carl Palmer whose goal-bound effort was deflected for a corner by keeper Dean Coleman.
Saints started the second period determined to seal the points winning three corners in quick succession. From a fourth corner kick on 52 minutes centre-back Tom Kemp rose beyond the far post to head back across goal for Diggin to score his second for the club on his first start heading on smartly.
This was game over for a Redditch side lacking a goal threat. For Brackley, Winters enjoyed his best spell of the game breaking free from the shackles of double-marking to fire in a shot on goal on 53 and dribbling past two defenders on 71 minutes and crossing just too deep for the eager Chennells. Minutes before Redditch substitute wide-man Aaron Moses-Garvey worked some space to cross for Joseph Harris who volleyed cleanly but over in United’s best opening.
Strikers Chennells and Diggin worked hard for Saints up front in a new partnership and Palmer was a formidable force in midfield as Brackley jumped to fourth spot in the table. A second consecutive clean sheet and solid performances right through the team set up this weekend’s tough trip to Leamington.
