Tributes have started coming in to a former Padbury resident who died in a helicopter crash in New York this morning.

Sonia Marra, a UK expatriate who was living in Australia died when the Bell 206 aircraft spun out of control after take-off and fell into the East River near 34th Street in midtown Manhattan.

She was in New York celebrating her 40th birthday.

Her partner, Helen Tamaki, 43, and mother Harriet Nicholson, 60, are in a critical condition.

Her stepfather Paul Nicholson and the pilot have been released from hospital.

Lynda Taynton, whose daughter grew up with Miss Marra, said: “Such sad news to wake up to this morning. Sonia and her family did live in Padbury for many years and we have fond memories or her growing up with our eldest daughter whilst her younger sister and our youngest daughter were also friends.

“Sonia emigrated to Australia some years ago and her mother Harriet and stepfather Paul retired to Portugal.

“Our sincere condolences to the family and wishing Harriet, Paul and Sonia’s partner a full and speedy recovery.”
