MARKET Hill in Buckingham is closed to traffic while emergency repairs are carried out due to a foul sewer collapse near the Old Gaol.
An Anglian Water spokesman said the company’s underground investigations had led it to believe the collapse was caused by the weight, over time, of a gas main resting on top.
The sewer has now been reinforced.
The spokesman said: “We are sorry for any inconvenience but had to act quickly in order to prevent sewer flooding and any further damage.
“It was also important to close the road to ensure the safety of our workforce and to speed up repairs.
“These have now been completed and we currently reinstating the road, which will re-open by Friday.”
From Monday, Castle Street in Buckingham will be closed to through traffic for approximately four weeks, while gas main replacement works are carried out.
A diversion will be in place.
