Firefighters were called to a road accident in Northamptonshire that saw a car crash into a set of traffic lights.

The accident happened at 1.30am yesterday (Sunday) at the A5 roundabout in Old Stratford, near the Travelodge hotel.

In all, the Vauxhall Corsa hit traffic lights, a bollard and a lamppost before coming to rest and bursting into flames.

A fire service spokeswoman said: “We were called because the car had caught fire after the accident. There was nobody in the vehicles by the time we arrived.

“We put out the fire and then made the scene safe.”

A man aged 26 was arrested and later charged with drink driving.
