Weather fails to freeze out carols

DESPITE the sub-zero temperatures more than 150 people attended the annual carol service on Brackley Piazza on Sunday evening.

Braving several inches of snow left by the previous day’s blizzard Brackley residents enjoyed the usual festive songs starting with Once in Royal David’s City.

The service ended with a rendition of Santa Claus is Coming to Town as the man himself appeared on the Crown Hotel balcony. It was so cold trumpeters from the Brackley and District Band had to retire because their instruments had become frozen and tuba player Patricia Young (pictured, right) was forced to stop mid-carol because her instrument also seized. Fortunately she came prepared with several hot water bottles.

Brackley Mayor Chris Blunden said: “I think it was very well attended considering the weather and the collection for the band and the Jubilee Choir was phenomenal. It was a very festive service with all the snow lying around and I thank everyone for being there and for their generosity.”
