MAKING the village of Stewkley carbon neutral over the next 10 years is the mission of a group of environmentally-minded people.
Stewkley Green was created in April last year in a bid to further boost environmental awareness and to help promote ways of reducing carbon emissions.

Roger Crews, one of the founder members, said the group had 29 members and a lot of support from local people.

He said: "We have helped various people get grants for loft insulation and we have a big programme to get people to take on energy-efficient lightbulbs and solar panels."

Last week, 60 people attended a meeting to discuss the issues raised in the film An Inconvenient Truth, which explores concerns over global warming.

The group is also currently surveying a number of houses in Stewkley in a bid to find out the village's carbon emissions.

Stewkley Green started after Mr Crews was approached by somebody trying to get a similar group together in the nearby town of Wing, but without much success.

Mr Crews then included a piece in the parish magazine, to which 15 people responded. A meeting was held and it was decided there was enough interest to take it forward.

"Quite a lot of people have put in condensing boilers and we have been looking for people to put solar panels on their roofs, although we haven't persuaded anyone yet," Mr Crews said.

The group meets once a month and is looking for more members. For information on its activities, visit www.stewkleygreen.org.uk.

Carbon neutral is where the amount of carbon emitted is balanced equally with the amount of carbon offset or removed.
