All 103 children donned gloves and green bibs to tidy up the area outside the school entrance, down School Hill and into the village, collecting 10 bags of litter and six bags of compostible items.

The clean-up was part of Keep Britain Tidy's Big Tidy Up which is taking place throughout September and has seen schools around the country take part.

Jacqui White, who is co-ordinator for the school's student eco-council, said: "We had parents coming to help and we tidied around the school, both inside and out, picking up litter, weeding, trimming plants and making the area generally tidy. We hope to add plenty of bags to the total including some for composting."

She added the school was keen to be environmentally-friendly and had received a bronze award from Eco-schools, which is run by the Foundation for Environmental Education, and was working towards its silver award.

The number of bags of rubbish collected will be sent to Environmental Campaigns (ENCAMS) – which runs Keep Britain Tidy – to be included on its website. So far, 3,031 bags have been collected around the country.
