RESIDENTS in Bicester and north Oxfordshire have recycled more than 113,000 tonnes of waste over the past five years as the district council celebrates the fifth anniversary of its recycling scheme.
This week, Cherwell District Council's recycling team handed out birthday cake to passers-by in three locations to celebrate the milestone.
The team visited Sheep Street, in Bicester, on Wednesday, along with the council's portfolio holder for community, health and the environment, Cllr George Reynolds.
Cllr Reynolds said: "During the last five years, Cherwell's residents have recycled 113,671 tonnes of waste that would have otherwise gone to landfill. Thas success is down to co-operation between residents and the council, working together to achieve such a high recycling rate."
He added the council was among the top recycling councils in the country and was close to achieving a 50% recycling rate. He also said the council plans to move to food waste composting and is encouraging businesses to cut their packaging.
