A RESOURCEFUL youngster from Buckingham is putting her vegetable growing know-how to good use by setting up her own miniature business.
Rebecca Sefton, 10, has started growing vegetable seeds to order to make some pocket money and to raise money for international charity, Seeds for Africa.
Rebecca, who goes to Bourton Meadow School, used to sell plants from her father's allotment from a wheelbarrow, with help from her sister Philippa, 12.
Now she has created an order form where people can order various plants, which are then delivered with instructions in time for spring. Produce includes runner beans, French beans, cabbage, lettuce, peas, sweetcorn, tomatoes, chillis and pumpkins. She said: "I have had quite a few orders including some family members and quite a few from Buckingham and Winslow. I have received about 20 order forms and I have got at least £100 worth, which is really good. I like doing it – I like seeing new life. When you have plants, you keep looking to see if they have started growing yet and if they have, you get a really good feeling."
All the seeds are grown in paper pots she makes herself and no chemicals are used, except organic seaweed fertiliser. Around one-quarter of the money Rebecca makes will go to Seeds for Africa, a charity which helps African families and communities by providing locally-sourced seeds, plants, agricultural equipment and advice.
Rebecca's dad, Mike, who helped her kick-start the business, said: "She has done brilliantly. She took some order forms around the local estate and I took some to work for her, which has been quite popular. She stood outside Waitrose when I went shopping and dished out some there. My greenhouse is swamped with all of Rebecca's plants at the moment."
