RECYCLERS in south Northants have helped put the district in the country's top 30.
South Northants Council is in 29th place in the recycling league table of 393 councils, the district's highest place to date, up from 49th place last year.

Figures released by the Department of Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) for 2007/2008 show the council composts 48% of household rubbish, which also means SNC is the best performing council in Northants.

In 2007/2008 SNC collected more than 11,000 tonnes for composting and around 7,300 tonnes for recycling.

Cllr Andrew Grant, councillor for the environment, said: "This is largely down to our residents and we thank them for all their hard work and commitment in recycling or composting as much as they can, as this is essential to our success.

"We are also continuing to offer help and advice to people so they are able to reduce and recycle as much of their waste as possible."
