Beckett brace seals win for tabletoppers

HELLENIC FOOTBALL: Two goals from Ardley United substitute Adam Beckett sealed a convincing 4-2 win at lowly Carterton last Saturday for the Premier Division tabletoppers.

Ardley went ahead in the 17th minute when Troy Bryan on the right wing shook off his marker and played the ball to Murray Nicholls whose shot took a deflection before finding the back of the net.

Four minutes later Carterton hit back when George Seacole fired past Ardley keeper Kurt Fox to level the scores.

After some further jittery moments, Ardley regained the lead on 29 minutes. Adam Richmond’s cross found Gary Wickens, who headed the ball against the crossbar, the rebound falling to Bryan who made no mistake. Further chances fell to both Nicholls and Bostock before half time, but the score remained 2-1 to Ardley at the break.

With Gary Wickens unable to take the field after the break due to illness, substitute Adam Beckett had a great chance to increase Ardley’s lead on the hour mark but headed the ball just over the bar.

However, barely 10 minutes later he made amends as a great through ball from Stuart Bridges set him free through the middle of the pitch and he fired it between the legs of keeper James Domm for 3-1. Carterton replied in the 83rd minute when a free kick was saved well by Fox but he was unable to hold onto the ball and Carl Williams followed up to reduce the arrears.

The game was made safe by Ardley a minute later when Bryan held the ball up on the left edge of the Carterton penalty area before turning the defender and crossing for Beckett to score his second.
