RUGBY

Aylesbury II 29

Bicester II 21

In an entertaining evenly contested match, Aylesbury’s superior finishing prowess proved to be the main difference between the two sides.

Aylesbury won the try count 5-3 and when Bicester mounted a fierce onslaught during the final 20 minutes they successfully defended their try line.

Bicester scored direct from the kick-off. Just outside the Aylesbury 22 on the left they won a turnover and after good work by hooker Jack Horwood, Dave Gooch and Dickie Walsh, Horwood himself plunged across for a try, which he also converted.

Next, from a line-out on the left, home centre Daniel Butcher crossed for a try which he also converted.

Immediately Aylesbury took the lead when, from a scrum on the right, left wing Ashley Dean, latched on to a superb crossfield kick to touch down for a try, which Butcher again converted.

Bicester then equalised 12 minutes from half time. Aylesbury were penalised at a line-out and from the resultant Bicester scrum, replacement centre Adam Spencer cut a beautiful angle down the left side to send Jason Smith galloping across for another converted try.

On the stroke of half time Aylesbury took a five-point lead when no 8 Darren Parker peeled off a maul to rumble over for an unconverted try in the left-hand corner.

As play resumed the Bicester defence were wrong-footed by a bouncing ball and home right wing John Judge hacked on to touch down in the right corner.

Straightaway Aylesbury scored their fifth and final try. Following pressure down the left, the backs worked the ball to gift Parker his second try. Six minutes later Bicester replied through after Jason Smith collected a high ball deep in his own half before Craig Smith’s 40-metre sprint ended with Adam Spencer crossing near the left hand post, Walsh again converting.
