SWIMMING: Last Saturday saw Bicester Blue Fins swimmers travel to Bromsgrove to begin their campaign for promotion from Division Three of the West Midlands National Arena League.
Bicester were competing against host club Bromsgrove plus Oldbury from Birmingham and Rugby Swimming club.
The opening event was the ladies open age group 200M individual medley which saw Bicester’s 15-yearold Ellie Bunce swimming up an age group to put in a winning performance with a time of 2.37.09.
Competition in the first batch of 50M freestyle and medley relay events was very tough with honours being spread evenly between Bicester, Rugby and Oldbury, with Oldbury just coming out on top by one point from second-placed Bicester.
The individual races, 50M for the 11 year olds and under and 100M for the 13/U, 15/U and open categories continued to be hard fought across all age groups. Eleven-year-old Chloe Wanless managed a clean sweep in her 50M backstroke and 50M freestyle races with team-mate Eloise Tagg winning the butterfly.
Georgia Tagg in the U13 age group 100M backstroke and freestyle races notched up two further wins. Fifteen-year-olds Cerys King and Ellie Bunce managed another three first places between them with Cerys winning the 100M freestyle event in her own age group and the open ladies and Ellie winning the 15-year-old 100M fly. There were also some fine individual swims from Emily Alexander in the 100M backstroke in both her own U15 age group and the open ladies where she came second and first respectively and a first place for both 15-year-old Nick Dalton in the 100M fly and mens open swimmer Luke Smith in the 100M freestyle.
Bicester’s determination saw them gain a further four firsts and two seconds in these final eight races which secured them a hard fought victory. The final points tally was Bicester first on 139 points, Rugby second on 123 points, Oldbury third on 117 points and Bromsgrove 4th on 101 points.
