Pearson’s half century brings Buckingham two wicket win

A SUPERB innings under pressure from Ashley Pearson helped Buckingham 1sts to a narrow two wicket win as rain greeted the start of the cricket season.
With the pre-season sun gone, Buckingham took on Great Tew on a green pitch, which the home side decided to have a bat on after winning the toss.
A slow start for the batting side was made worse when Buckingham’s Jason Ell and Josh Nix picked up wickets in consecutive overs to remove both openers at 11-2.
Change bowlers Vish Valambhia and Ben Stafford came into the attack and each picked up an early wicket to leave Tew lurching on 42-4.
Shurmer joined Ed Gross and the pair added 25 runs before two more quick wickets left the hosts 70-6, but Joe White and Gross added 40 in just under 10 overs to breathe new life into Tew’s effort. That hope was shortlived though as James Gear was brought into the attack and proceeded to take three wickets for just one run in seven balls.
Liam Manley came in at number 11 and supported Gross well, helping the number three to move onto 58 and his team to see out the overs and finish on 156-9.
In reply Matt Taylor took two early wickets to leave Buckingham stuttering on 14-2. But Pearson and Andrew Fletcher came together and built a solid partnership, with Pearson taking advantage of some short bowling.
After adding 58 Fletcher was removed for 18 by Joe White in his first over. Simon Myatt then added 21 with Pearson before becoming White’s second victim.
And when Ed Gross took two quick wickets Buckingham were staring down the abyss at 110-6.
James Tomlinson (18) was able to help Pearson add 25 vital runs in 12 overs, but the opener then perished to White for 74 and Buckingham lost an eighth wicket.
But Josh Nix struck 14 from eight balls to see them over the line and claim a winning start to the season.
Buckingham Town 2nds drew their first League match of the season at home to Great & Little Tew 2nds.
Electing to bat Town lost two quick wickets before skipper Graham Judd, in fine form, scored a good 64.
Andy Thatcher hit a brisk 31 and useful runs came from Callum Cater (27) and Ryan Spragg (21no) as Town posted a modest 217-7. Lawrence Brock took 4-35.
In reply, Tew made a solid start through Catling (46) and Powles (26), but then lost wickets cheaply going to 91-6.
Just as Town looked to be closing in on the win an easy dropped catch left Tew off the hook and Myatt, with 57 not out, and Darby, 40 not out, saw Tew to 193-6 with some lusty hitting.
It was enough to get the visitors to their target, but Town were denied an opening day win. Dom Pritchard was the pick of the bowlers with 3-36 as Buckingham picked up 15 points to their opponents eight.
And newly promoted Buckingham Town 3rd XI completed a good day for the club with a convincing away win against BNOCC 2nds.
On a difficult pitch to bat on with variable bounce, the home team were soon struggling at 28-4 thanks to a hostile opening spell form Matt Dipple (3-31) ably supported by James Clark (2-16).
Spinners Harry Martin (3-34) and James Carlin (1-13) kept up the pressure on the BNOCC middle order and with excellent catches from James Clark (two), Emma McStraw behind the stumps and Ed Butler, Town restricted BNOCC to 102 all out.
Town’s batsmen coped with the conditions better employing a more positive approach aided by a high proportion of extras.
Some crisp striking from Harry Martin, who top scored with 23, and Chris Coates’ pugnacious cameo of 20 not out guided BTCC home to a comfortable five wicket victory and a maximum 25 points.
