Stowe cricket star wins prize at Aviva Awards

STOWE School’s cricket sensation Ben Duckett has been honoured for his sporting achievements in 2012 at the Aviva School Sport Matters Awards at Lord’s Cricket Ground.

The 18-year-old was commended in the male pupil of the year category at a glittering ceremony in London, receiving his prize from Paralympic 200m champion Richard Whitehead.

Duckett rubbed shoulders with Olympic and Paralympic legends past and present – including Jessica Ennis, Sarah Storey, Christine Ohuruogu, Duncan Goodhew and Jonathan Edwards – at Lord’s.

His recognition is just reward for a year that saw him break into the England U19 team while still only 17 and feature for Northamptonshire in the Twenty20 Cup, all while still piling on the runs for his school.

Duckett, who signed a three-year professional deal with Northants this year, said: “To be commended for an award like this is just a fantastic way to finish off the year for me.

“The competition is very strong, I mean Tom Daley won the award, he’s won an Olympic medal, so you can see just how well school sport is doing.

“I went on tour with England U17s at the start of the year and by the end I was playing with England U19s at the World Cup in Australia so it’s been quite a 12 months.

“Next year there is another World Cup at U19 level and also a tour to South Africa at the start of the year so I am going to be very busy. I cannot wait for it all to get started again.”

Olympic heptathlon champion Ennis, who was the star guest at the ceremony, feels Duckett should be immensely proud of his achievements.

She said: “This is the best year yet to celebrate people like Ben and it’s fantastic that we are getting this chance at an awards ceremony like this.”

The Aviva and Daily Telegraph School Sport Matters Awards recognise outstanding achievements in school sport across the country, and are part of Aviva’s wider commitment to support the next generation of British talent. For more information visit aviva.co.uk/rugby-sponsorship.
