Young cricketers visit Sri Lanka on tour
BUCKS U11 County cricketers had a taste of international cricket when they visited Sri Lanka on a recent tour.
The travelling squad of 15, including Akeley Wood pupil Fred Wilkinson, played at some of the most famous international grounds in the world, including Galle and Pallekele.
The team used the same changing rooms and pavilions as some of the top teams in the world and also had their book signed by many of the greats such as Malinga and Dilshan.
Young mascots accompanied the team out onto the field for the national anthems and live commentary brought an added edge of excitement.
It was not all cricket though, as during the tour they visited an elephant sanctuary, a turtle rescue centre and a Buddhist shrine.
A local school was also on the agenda and gifts were given to the children.
The final night dinner saw the boys meet Sri Lankan stars such as Aravinda de Silva and the current test match wicket keeper, Jayawardene.
After the trip, Wilkinson said: “It was an incredible trip; playing at amazing cricket grounds, being treated like the England professionals, visiting important cultural places and wildlife centres and seeing an entirely different way of life.”
