THE children of East Claydon School and their friends from Giles Brook School in Milton Keynes unveiled a racing car in the school playground at East Claydon last week that will carry their colours in the Walter Hayes Trophy at Silverstone on November 3-4.

The Sheshon Racing Van Diemen RF78 has a special livery that has been designed by all of the children at the school.

The 1600cc single-seater will be driven
in the Walter Hayes Trophy, the world’s largest knockout racing event, by James Wood.

Barry Rogers, Headteacher at East Claydon, said: “This is an amazing project. The children have spent the autumn term learning about motor racing and motoring.

“The term of work has centred on all aspects of this amazing project, and all topics have been covered. The fun aspect has been the design of the car and we are thrilled with the finished product.”

Driver James added: “I am so pleased to be associated with East Claydon and Giles Brook schools. The children have had a fantastic time learning all about the sport and the dynamics that motor racing can offer.

“The racing of the car in the Walter Hayes Trophy is the culmination of two months of school work and I am very much looking forward to representing the team!”

East Claydon School were involved in a similar project in 2010, when James Wood and Joey Foster drove cars in the Walter Hayes Trophy.

Barry Rogers said: “Two years ago we were very lucky to have the opportunity to run a project similar to that we have undertaken this year.

“The children really benefited from the experience, and we decided to run the project – albeit in a slightly different manner – again this year.

“The children have loved every minute of their work and we hope that our car will do us proud at Silverstone in the Walter Hayes Trophy.”

Earlier this week the school visited Silverstone Circuit for a tour of the track and its facilities.

Over 120 cars are expected to participate in the 2012 Walter Hayes Trophy – the 12th running of the event. Competitors from all over the world will descend on Silverstone next week and tickets for the event can be obtained from the Silverstone Booking Office: www.silverstone.co.uk
