Football: Robins looking for three points
Buckingham Town boss Phil Simons will be looking for three points against UCL Division One newcomers Harborough Town this Saturday after the Robins were pipped 3-2 by Sileby Rangers in their opening league game.
Simons was left frustrated after a last minute goal by Rangers' Mike Ankers sunk his young side at Ford Meadow last Saturday.
The Robins were 2-2 thanks to a brace from skipper Chris Robson and hoping for at least a point with full time nearing when poor marking from a set piece allowed Rangers to fire home the winner past keeper Max Crocombe.
Simons said afterwards: "We played some excellent football, dominating for much of the time and creating chances but in the end three lapses of concentration cost us the game.
"It was a thrilling spectacle for the fans, but extremely disappointing to come away pointless after we played so well."
There were excuses for Town who lost Alex Court to a dislocated shoulder after half time and they were without pacy striker Jonny Wigglesworth.
The Robins began brightly creating a couple of good chances but against the run of play Jamie Cunningham opened the scoring for Sileby after 20 minutes when capitalising on a defensive lapse.
Two minutes later Town levelled when Jared Cunliff was brought down in the Rangers box and Robson fired home from the penalty spot.
After the break Buckingham continued to dominate and Robson grabbed his second with 20 minutes left.
But resilient Rangers struck back to square the game through Nick Worley with a quarter-of-an-hour left and then as the final whistle was about to sound, Ankers stepped up to net the winning goal as he took advantage of another Buckingham lapse.
Max Crocombe had an outstanding game in goal for the Robins and 16-year-old Moretonville player Josh Whitehead made a promising debut up front for the hosts.
But Town were dealt a blow as defender Jordan Simons, son of boss Phil, will be sidelined for several weeks with an ankle ligament injury.
Saturday's game at home to Harborough, who were promoted to Division One last season, kicks off at 3pm, with Robins' fans hoping for the first win of the season.
