Ardley United went top of the Hellenic Premier Division for the first time this season after a crucial 1-0 win at fellow title rivals Wantage Town.

Ollie Stanbridge’s second half goal was sufficient to give Ardley the points and put them top of the table, three points clear of Wantage, who have two games in hand.

Wantage were on top in the opening exchanges as Harry Halls blazed over early on before Ryan Brooks went close with a shot that deflected just wide.

The game opened up as the half progressed and turned into an end-to-end affair with Jack Harding having to be alert to deny Richie Claydon moments before Lewis Noice saved from Brooks as the half ended goalless.

Both sides had chances in a second half similar to the first, but the decisive moment came on the hour-mark when Standbridge’s spectacular overhead kick flew into the net.

Wantage made changes as they looked to rescue the game, but the Ardley back line, marshalled superbly by Chris Jackson, held firm to see out a huge three points.

Ardley take on strugglers Shrivenham at The Playing Fields on Saturday.
