Ardley United’s hopes of chasing down the leaders at the top of the Hellenic Premier Division suffered a setback when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Holyport on Tuesday evening.

Neither side were able to take hold of the game with the first clear chance falling to Holyport as Fred Tripp weaved his way through a static Ardley defence before shooting wide.

At the other end, some good passing between Diego Petriaggi and Jon Gardner played Joe Eyre in but his shot just cleared the home crossbar.

United then took the lead, however, when a Callum Convey free-kick was headed home by Ricky Johnson.

Ardley maintained their lead until half-time, but Luke Dexter’s 78th minute header earned the home side a point. Ardley did have a late chance to steal all three points but Ollie Stanbridge mis-kicked when clean through.

United are currently seventh in the table.

This weekend, Ardley welcome Oxford City Nomads to The Playing Fields.
