Buckingham Athletic surrendered a two goal lead to allow Arlesey Town Reserves to pick up their first point of the SSML Division One campaign in a 2-2 draw at the weekend.

Athletic came into the game on the back of successive wins while Arlesey had lost all six of their their games so far his season, and that was reflected in the opening half as the visitors wrestled almost total control from the outset.

Simon King struck the woodwork as early as the eighth minute before the same man was denied by a last-ditch tackle when through on goal.

The resulting corner was only half cleared and a free-kick was awarded in a promising spot, with King whipping the ball in and skipper Nick Bennion making the slightest of deflections to send the ball crashing onto the post. The ball then took a double deflection, with the final touch from a defender sending it past the home keeper and into the net.

Athletic were now looking good value for their lead as a raking pass by Dan Staley found King, who controlled instantly and shaved the post with another fierce strike.

Jack Cater was next to hit the woodwork, however the rebound fell kindly to King who was left in space to double the away side’s lead.

Athletic had further chances in the first half but their two goal lead was an accurate reflection of their dominance in the first half as they went into half-time in control.

It was all change after the restart, however, as Arlesey came out a different side and halved the deficit thanks to a well-placed header.

Buoyed by this, Arlesey dominated possession and only left the visitors the odd chance on the counter. One break in the 76th minute saw King screw the ball wide from a tight angle, and after being put through one-on-one, Ladi Labode should have scored, but failed to hit the target.

Athletic were made to pay for wasting these opportunities when, in the 85th minute, Arlesey converted a cross with a good header at the far post.

Both teams had chances to nick a winner but with neither keeper troubled, the game finished level to leave Athletic rueing two points dropped.
