Brady takes responsibility for Fylde defeat

Brackley Town manager Jon Brady said there was no excuses after his side’s 4-0 thrashing to newly-promoted AFC Fylde on the opening day of the season on Saturday.

A seven hour journey due to traffic congestion on the M6 brought a delayed kick-off. Once the action got underway, a well-contested first half gradually saw the home side get on top, taking a narrow lead into the break before overwhelming Saints in a sorry second half to finish comfortable 4-0 winners.

AFC Fylde’s 42nd minute opener was neatly worked with the excellent Richie Allen reaching the by-line and pulling back for Michael Potts to head home, leaving debut keeper Dean Snedker no chance.

By the hour mark, the Coasters were cruising at 3-0 courtesy of fine finishing by Allen and Joe Booth. Allen then hit the post and Snedker saved well from Danny Rowe’s header but Fylde increased the lead with a rocket from substitute Danny Lloyd on 78 minutes.

Fylde had chances to embarrass the visitors further but overall were well worth their 4-0 win. Saints rarely threatened Fylde keeper Ben Hinchcliffe and failed to win a single corner throughout the 90 minutes on a miserable day that brought a first defeat on the opening day of a season for over ten years.

A disappointed Brady said afterwards: “The day has been one to put behind us from start to finish.

“The coach journey was a nightmare but is no excuse at all. On our arrival at the ground we had a few minutes to settle and we knew what we had to do.

“For half an hour there was nothing in it but our reaction to conceding was disappointing. Some players are not fully fit after an injury-hit pre-season but I selected the team and I take responsibility for that.

“We have a lot of work to do. Fair play to Fylde who were worthy winners today.”
