Free-scoring Buckingham Athletic made a barnstorming start to the new season this week with 16 goals scored in their opening two fixtures.
Athletic began their South Midlands League Division One campaign away at London Lions on Saturday, where they were edged out in a nine-goal thriller.
Sid Hawkins put the visitors ahead on 15 minutes, but the Lions roared back to take a 3-2 lead into half-time with Dave O’Dell netting Athletic’s second.
The goal fest continued in the second half as Buckingham struck again through new signing Alex Woodfine and then Phil Martin, but O’Dell’s missed penalty proved pivotal as Lions ran out 5-4 winners.
On Tuesday, Athletic twice found themselves behind in the opening 10 minutes against Chesham United Reserves, but a first half hat-trick from Hawkins gave United a slender lead at the break.
Just 45 seconds into the second half, Martin doubled his side’s advantage before he bagged his second to secure a 5-2 victory and all three points.
