Buckingham Athletic opened their 2013/14 SSML Division One season with a disappointing 6-2 defeat at Kings Langley.

Damien Wiffin’s side went into game in high spirits following a good pre-season, but two early goals put the home side in control.

Buckingham attempted to weather the storm but things only got worse when Ryan Wiffin was seen to pull down a Kings Langley player on the edge of the box, resulting in a straight red card.

The home side then increased their lead on 25 minutes, but Athletic fought back and got themselves back into the game through Phil Martin, who broke through the Kings Langley defence and slid the ball past the advancing goalkeeper to make it 3-1 at half time.

The second half kicked off with Athletic looking the better of the two sides, but Sutton extended their lead when, on 67 and 73 minutes, they made it 5-1.

Dave O’Dell pulled one back with a great free-kick but Kings Langley added a sixth in the final minutes.

Damien Wiffin said afterwards: “To play over an hour with 10 men is always difficult but I am sure we will be OK – you have to look at the positives”. This Saturday, Athletic are at home to Harpenden Town at Stratford Fields, 3pm kick-off.
