Two goals in an impressive first half secured a fourth win and fifth clean sheet in six games for Brackley Town at much-fancied Guiseley AFC on Saturday.
The 2-0 victory maintains Saints’ unbeaten start to the season and moves them up to second, two points behind leaders Altrincham, having conceded just one goal in their opening six Conference North matches.
Glenn Walker and Ryan Austin provided the assists for Izak Reid and Eddie Nisevic to apply the finishing touches to put Saints 2-0 ahead on the half hour as the home side struggled to gain a foothold in the game.
A stronger second half performance by the Whites produced a more even game as both sides had chances but Saints’ defending held out and nobody in the crowd of over 600 could deny that the away win was the right result.
Reid swept home Walker’s cross on 13 minutes from a move begun by Reid himself with the wide-man making ground to get into the danger zone before finishing emphatically.
Billy Turley saved well from Guiseley’s Adam Priestley before Ryan Austin’s athletic header was touched over the line by Nisevic to double the advantage that Saints almost increased further on the stroke of half time as Reid’s audacious volley was blocked.
The home side created pressure at the re-start but Saints’ resolve and Guiseley’s lack of cutting edge meant the home side rarely threatened to reduce the deficit although Turley was called into action to save from Gavin Rothery and in the dying minutes at full stretch and low down again from Rothery.
Saints had their own chances as Steve Diggin’s lob from distance was well saved and Gary Mulligan brought a point blank save from keeper Steve Drench.
However, no further goals were added as the match ended in a 2-0 victory for the visitors, giving Jon Brady’s side a fine start to the new season with a home game against Stalybridge Celtic to come this Saturday.
