Buckingham Town opened the new season with a disappointing 2-0 loss against recently-promoted Peterborough Sports in United Counties League Division One.
The Robins were in high spirits following a good pre-season, but a depleted squad were beaten by goals from Dan Clements and Gary Gibbs.
Buckingham boss Neil Griffiths said afterwards: “We are disappointed in ourselves as we wanted to get things going with a win.
“Peterborough Sports are not a bad side but the game was there to be won.
“We have nine players unavailable through injury, illness and suspension at the moment, and while I have complete faith in the squad as a whole, that is a couple too many to have unavailable.”
Despite the loss, Griffiths remains confident his side can react quickly ahead of back-to-back home games in the next eight days.
He added: “We will react well and train as hard as ever this week and look to put things right this week against Chenecks. “It might just be the reality check we needed to spur us on and make sure we achieve what we have aimed for this season.”
This weekend, Buckingham entertain ON Chenecks, who drew 2-2 with Rushden & Higham United in their first game, at Manor Fields, 3pm kick-off, before hosting Thrapston next Wednesday.
