Eric Odhiambo’s 26th minute screamer saw Brackley Town through to the third qualifying round of the FA Cup where they will face St Albans City on October 11.
Following last year’s memorable cup run to the second round, Saints produced a disciplined and determined all-round team performance to defeat Farnborough 1-0 in Monday evening’s replay and revive hopes of a similar run this season.
Saturday’s second half nightmare that saw a 2-0 lead and hopes of a cup run all but disappear were laid to rest with a battling display full of excellent performances, none more so than from Chris Carruthers.
Ryan Rowe returned to the attack alongside Greg Pearson, who again turned in a sterling display, as Saints’ two banks of four worked tirelessly for each other to snuff out ‘Boro.
Odhiambo’s goal was a moment of magic, the chance coming from nothing and struck sweetly into the top corner from 20 yards to give some respite after the home side had dominated the opening exchanges.
Extending his run in the side, Billy Turley was a reassuring presence all night, saving well low down from Okenabirhie on just three minutes and surviving a disallowed effort just minutes later.
After the break, Saints had to weather the storm but hit back, Dwayne Samuels’ surging run earning a corner and Ryan Rowe’s well-struck free-kick testing goalkeeper Craig Ross before Eric Odhiambo hit another fine effort that needed a sharp save from Ross.
In five minutes added time, Boro threw everything forward including bringing Ross into goalmouth action during sustained pressure that brought three late corners but Brackley held on.
